How to use Organic Frankincense Essential Oil:

Topically: Mix one or more drops into a carrier oil for topical use.

Boswellia er ei planteslekt med ca. 25 arter av alltidgrønne busker og små trær som er hjemmehørende i tropiske områder av Asia og Afrika. En oleoresin, kjent som frankincense, pipler naturlig fram fra disse trærne når barken blir skadet. Frankincense kan utvinnes fra flere Boswellia-arter som B. carteri, B. papyrifera og B. serrata. Slektsnavnet Boswellia er gitt for å ære den skotske botanikeren John Boswell (1719-1780). Det vanlige navnet frankincense kommer fra middelalder fransk og betyr «virkelig duft». Et alternativt navn til frankincense er olibanum. Dette navnet forekommer ofte i eldre tekster, og man tror det kommer fra latin «Olium Libanum», altså olje fra Libanon.

Frankincense har vært verdsatt i flere tusen år, og i gammel tid var harpiksen trolig nesten like mye verdt som gull. Opprinnelsen til bruken som offer, har sikkert sin bakgrunn i at frankincense var blant de mest lovpriste og kostbare stoffer i antikken. Frankincense ble i oldtiden ansett å kunne gi et langt liv og god hukommelse, og ble brent som røykelse for å drive bort onde ånder fra den syke. Harpiksen har blitt brent på altere i templer siden antikken, en tradisjon som trolig går lenger tilbake i tid enn den skrevne historien, og som fremdeles praktiseres i mange religioner.I oldtidens Egypt ble frankincense brent ved soloppgang for å hedre solguden Ra. Egypterne brukte også frankincense i forbindelse med balsamering. Relieffer (ca. 1512-1482 f.Kr.) på dronning Hatsheputs tempel i Luxor i Egypt viser frankincense-trær som vokser i potter, trolig dyrket for å lage foryngende ansiktsmasker. Frankincense (som i Bibelen blir kalt røkelse) var sammen med myrra og gull de tre gavene som vismennene ga til Jesus-barnet.En egenskap ved frankincense er at den har evnen til å gjøre åndedrettet dypere og saktere, noe som gir ro og er nyttig ved bønn og meditasjon. Ved siden av seremoniell og rituell bruk, var frankincense etterspurt som parfyme. Frankincense har således blitt brukt til både kosmetiske og medisinske formål siden tidenes morgen, og har bl.a. vært en ingrediens i teriak og andre universalmidler (panaseer).

Eterisk olje av frankincense
Frankincense er en varm, pikant eterisk olje som virker lindrende ved angsttilstander. I dampform brukes den til å gjøre åndedrettet dypere. Det er en styrkende olje med betennelseshemmende og astringerende egenskaper. Frankincense er en nydelig foryngende og oppløftende olje som anvendes i massasje, hudvann og badevannet. Noen dråper frankincense i en oljebrenner virker svært oppløftende, og er gunstig hvis du føler deg stresset, sliten eller overarbeidet. Da frankincense har en god virkning på nervesystemet, kan den være en god beroligende olje ved angst og anspenthet. Eterisk olje av frankincense går godt sammen med sitrusoljer, krydderoljer og basilikum, sedertre, myrra, neroli, furu, sandeltre og vetiver.

Medisinsk virkning av frankincense
De fleste virkningene til frankincense er knyttet til boswellinsyrene, som er vist å hemme biosyntesen av betennelsesskapende prostaglandiner og leukotriner. Innvortes blir frankincense brukt i form av preparater som er standardisert mot boswellinsyre, og de kan anvendes ved revmatiske plager (inkl. revmatoid artritt), betennelser og krampetilstander i de øvre luftveiene (halsbetennelser, krampaktig bronkitt, bronkialastma), fordøyelseskanalen (diaré, magesmerter, ulcerøs kolitt, Crohn’s sykdom) og urinveiene (blærekatarr etc.). For å fremme virkningen ved problemer med urinveiene, bør væskeinntaket (inklusive urteteer) være på mer enn to liter daglig. En nærmere beskrivelse av disse anvendelsesområdene er gitt nedenfor.

I kinesiske medisin brukes frankincense innvortes ved menstruasjonssmerter, og utvortes ved skader, hudutslett og til munnskyllevann ved plager i munnen, tannkjøttet og halsen. Kineserne har dessuten brukt frankincense mot tuberkulose i lymfekjertlene og mot lepra.

Frankincense er fin for luftveiene
Frankincense er særlig aktiv i forhold til lungene, og er en av de mest verdifulle oljene ved luftveisinfeksjoner. Den er et godt antiseptisk middel og roer ned hoste, og brukes for eksempel ved forkjølelse, sår hals, hoste, kronisk bronkitt, gjentatte lungebetennelser og emfysem. Siden frankincense har en beroligende virkning på pusten og hjelper til å senke pustefrekvensen, vil en meditativ tilstand lettere kunne oppnås. Den passer derfor i aromalampen når man mediterer. Brukt i massasje, inhalator eller badevannet, er den særlig verdifull for personer med astma, da den gjør pusten dypere og saktere. Varmen fra dampinhalasjon kan imidlertid forverre tilstanden ved astma, så denne metoden må brukes med forsiktighet. 

Mye brukt i hudpleiemidler
De sammentrekkende, styrkende og foryngende egenskapene til frankincense gjør den til en av de viktigste oljene til forbedring av hudens struktur. Oljen brukes særlig ved sprukken, fet, værbitt og aldrende hud, og den har definitivt en styrkende virkning ved å hjelpe til å gjenskape spensten i en slapp ansiktshud. Den kan både forsinke dannelsen av rynker og redusere rynker som allerede er dannet. Siden oljen både er antiseptisk og astringerende, kan den også bidra til å lukke og lege sår.

Eterisk olje av frankincense ved plager i underlivet
Oljen har en affinitet til urinveiene, og brukt i varme kompresser eller til lokal vask kan frankincense hjelpe til å lindre blærekatarr. Da den er et livmorsstyrkende middel, kan den være til nytte ved unormalt kraftig menstruasjon. Oljen kan da brukes i badevannet eller til myk massasje over buken. Den kan trygt brukes under graviditet og er fin å bruke under fødselen, da den virker beroligende og forankrende. 

Frankincense ved revmatiske plager
Utvortes kan man bruke harpiks av frankincense i form av et liniment for å lindre revmatiske smerter eller skader. Urten kan også brukes i form av en salve for å hjelpe til å hele sår og forhindre arrdannelse. Den gunstige virkningen ved behandling av artritt, mener man skyldes hemming av enzymet 5-lipoksygenase, som hindrer dannelsen av levkotriener. Det er vist at boswellinsyrer definitivt har en betennelseshemmende virkning hos dyr, mens resultatene av studier på mennesker har vært mer sprikende.

Noen andre medisinske egenskaper til frankincense
De astringerende og betennelseshemmende egenskapene gjør frankincense nyttig i behandlingen av alle tilstander med stor produksjon og utskilling av slim, for eksempel diaré. Frankincense forbedrer sirkulasjonen av både blod og chi, og kan være nyttig ved høyt blodtrykk. Den hjelper bihulene til å bli mer fleksible, trekker sammen betent vev, og hjelper til å lindre smerter. Den bidrar også til å forhindre skader av frie radikaler.

Virkning av frankincense på psyken

Anvendelse og dosering av frankincense eterisk olje
Ved luftveisplager som astma, bronkitt, hoste, forkjølelse og strupekatarr kan man bruke 2-3 dråper frankincense til 30 ml bæreolje (f.eks. mandelolje), og massere brystet med oljen. Man kan også bruke 4-5 dråper i en dampinhalator, noe som også kan lindre tretthet og være til hjelp ved meditasjon og bønn. For å bedre blodsirkulasjonen, kan man bruke 4-5 dråper frankincense i 30 ml mandelolje og massere hele kroppen. Oljen kan også brukes i badevannet. Ved liggesår, skader og arr kan man dryppe 2-3 dråper på en kald kompress som legges på det aktuelle området, og ved fet hud og blemmer kan man ha 1-2 dråper på en bomullspad og stryke huden forsiktig. Til aldrende hud bruker man 2-3 dråper frankincense olje til 30 ml mandelolje og masser ansiktet forsiktig med denne oljen. Hemoroider kan behandles ved å tilsette 2-3 dråper frankincense til to spiseskjeer flytende lanolin og massere det aktuelle området med dette.

Annen bruk av frankincense
Eterisk olje av frankincense brukes kommersielt til å smaksette konfekt, bakervarer, desserter, iskrem og leskedrikker. Frankincense har stor verdi i parfyme- og duftindustrien, både som et fiksativ og som hovedduft. Den er særlig verdifull i parfymeblandinger med orientalsk stil. I de landene hvor treet er viltvoksende, tygges harpiksen på lignende måte som vi tygger harpiks fra gran.

Advarsler, bivirkninger og kontraindikasjoner
Den eteriske oljen er ikke giftig, ikke irriterende og ikke sensibiliserende (allergifremkallende). Det er ingen rapporter om kontraindikasjoner eller bivirkninger når den eteriske oljen brukes forskriftsmessig. Bruk den imidlertid med måte, som enhver eterisk olje. Når man bruker frankincense innvortes, må man anvende bare små mengder og over en kort periode. Overdosering kan gi kvalme og oppkast. Frankincense skal ikke gis innvortes til gravide kvinner (selv om det tradisjonelt har vært brukt som røykelse etter barnefødsler i Oman).

Frankincense has a significant meaning in Christianity, and is believed to be one of the gifts offered by the three wise men to the newborn Jesus. Today, this fragrant resin is transformed into an essential oil that's valued not only in religious practice, but also in aromatherapy and natural health. Read on to learn more about frankincense oil.

What Is Frankincense Oil?
Frankincense, also known as olibanum,1 comes from the Boswellia genustrees, particularly Boswellia sacra and Boswellia carteri. The milky white sap is extracted from the tree bark, allowed to harden into a gum resin for several days, and then scraped off in tear-shaped droplets.

Boswellia trees grow in African and Arabian regions, including Yemen, Oman, Somalia and Ethiopia.3 Oman is the best known and most ancient source of frankincense, where it's been traded and shipped to other places like the Mediterranean, India, and China for thousands of years.

The highest-quality frankincense is clear and silvery, but with a slight green tinge. Brown-yellow varieties are the cheapest and most readily available. In Oman, the best frankincense is usually reserved for the sultan and is rarely shipped out of the country.

Frankincense is traditionally burned as incense, and was charred and ground into a powder to produce the heavy kohl eyeliner used by Egyptian women. Today, this resin is steam-distilled to produce an aromatic essential oil with many benefits. Frankincense oil has a woody, earthy, spicy and slightly fruity aroma, which is calming and relaxing. It's said to be sweeter, fresher and cleaner than frankincense resin.

Uses of Frankincense Oil
Frankincense oil has long been revered in the Middle East, where it's been used in religious ceremonies as an anointing oil for thousands of years. It is also a popular ingredient in cosmetics, and has even been found in the remains of Anglo-Saxons and ancient Egyptians.7

I believe that frankincense oil is one of the top essential oils you can use for your health. It's known for its comforting properties, and is useful for visualizing, improving one's spiritual connection and helping overcome stress and despair.8 In aromatherapy, frankincense oil is either inhaled or diffused via a vaporizer — a sedative that has been known to help induce a feeling of mental peace, relaxation and satisfaction, and helps relieve anxiety, anger and stress.

Frankincense oil may also help in healthy cell regeneration and keep existing cells and tissues healthy. It's useful for skin health, and can help treat dry skin, reverse signs of aging and reduce the appearance of stretch marks and scars.10 Frankincense oil's astringent properties help:

Strengthen gums and hair roots
Stop wounds from bleeding
Speed up the healing of cuts, acne, insect bites and boils
Composition of Frankincense Oil
The main components of frankincense oil are ketonic alcohol (olibanol), resinous matters (30 to 60 percent) and terpenes such as a-and p-pinene, camphene, dipentene and phellandrene. It also contains alpha pinene, actanol, bornyl acetate, linalool, octyl acetate, incensole and incensyl acetate.

The monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes are the most valuable elements of frankincense oil. According to the book, "Reference Guide for Essential Oils," by Connie and Alan Higley, monoterpenes help prevent and discharge toxins from your liver and kidneys, and have antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating, analgesic (weak) and expectorant properties.

Meanwhile, sesquiterpenes can go beyond the blood-brain barrier and help simulate the limbic system of your brain, as well as your hypothalamus, and pineal and pituitary glands.

Benefits of Frankincense Oil
The health benefits of frankincense oil are mostly attributed to its anti-inflammatory, astringent, antiseptic, disinfectant, digestive, diuretic and expectorant properties. It also has cicatrisant, carminative, cytophylactic, emenagogue, uterine and vulnerary effects.

Frankincense oil is considered a tonic, as it benefits all the systems operating in the body, including the digestive, respiratory, nervous and excretory systems. It also aids the absorption of nutrients and strengthens your immune system.16 Frankincense oil has been found useful for certain health conditions, such as:

• Arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) — Research by Cardiff University scientists found that frankincense can aid in inhibiting the production of key inflammatory molecules, helping prevent the breakdown of the cartilage tissue that causes these conditions.

In addition, Indian frankincense or boswellin, also a member of the Boswellia genus, has been found to significantly reduce inflammation in animal studies. It is actually one of my personal favorites, as I have seen it work well as a natural painkiller for many of my former rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients.

• Colds and respiratory disorders — Frankincense oil can help break up phlegm deposits in your respiratory tract and lungs, and can potentially relieve bronchitis-related congestion.18

• Oral health problems — The antiseptic qualities of this oil can help prevent bad breath, cavities, toothaches, mouth sores and other infections.

• Digestive disorders — Frankincense oil can help speed up the secretion of gastric juices, bile and acids, and help stimulate peristaltic motion to allow food to move properly through your intestines.

• Uterine health — Frankincense oil regulates estrogen production in women and helps reduce the risk of post-menopause tumor or cyst formation in the uterus (uterine cancer). It also regulates the menstrual cycle of premenopausal women.

Frankincense is also being studied for its potential to treat cancer. Scientists have observed that there's an agent in this oil that may help stop cancer from spreading.

How to Make Frankincense Oil
Frankincense oil is made by steam-distilling the raw resin. When buying frankincense oil, make sure that you only choose 100 percent pure essential oil of the highest quality.

Also, do not confuse frankincense essential oil with fragrance oil. Essential oils come from plants, while fragrance oils are usually artificially created and often contain synthetic chemicals. Although they smell good and are typically less expensive, fragrance oils do not give you the therapeutic benefits of organic essential oils.

How Does Frankincense Oil Work?
The effects and benefits of frankincense oil can be acquired by applying it topically, inhaling it using a diffuser or vaporizer or ingesting it in very small amounts. For pain relief, simply massage the oil onto the affected areas. Meanwhile, using a diffuser or inhaler works for treating colds and clearing up respiratory blockages. You can also sprinkle a few drops on a clean cloth and inhale the scent or add it to your bathwater for a rejuvenating soak.25

Frankincense oil can be directly applied to the skin or blended with other carrier oils such as jojoba or sweet almond oil.

Is Frankincense Oil Safe?
Yes, frankincense is generally safe. However, I advise doing a spot test first, to check if you have any sensitivity to this oil. When taking frankincense oil internally, it's best to dilute a drop in an edible carrier oil (like coconut oil), a teaspoon of honey or a glass of purified water or any non-acidic, non-dairy beverage.26 You can also put a drop or two under your tongue.27 However, ingesting this oil is not recommended for children ages 6 and below. Older children and teens may also require higher dilutions.

You must also remember that not all frankincense oil brands are made for internal use, so make sure you check the label before taking it.

Side Effects of Frankincense Oil
There are no reported severe side effects of using this oil. However, in some rare cases, frankincense oil can cause skin rashes, gastrointestinal distress, such as nausea, stomach pain and hyperacidity.

It also has blood thinning effects, and may increase the risk of abnormal bleeding in people with a bleeding disorder or taking anticoagulant medications.Frankincense essential oil is also not recommended for pregnant women and nursing moms, as it acts as an emenagogue and may induce menstruation, which may be dangerous for an unborn fetus.

Top 8 Frankincense Uses

1. Stress-Relieving Bath Soak

Frankincense oil immediately induces the feeling of peace, relaxation and satisfaction. Add a few drops of frankincense oil to a hot bath for stress relief. You can also add frankincense to an oil diffuser or vaporizer to help fight anxiety and for experiencing relaxation in your home all the time. Some people believe that the fragrance of frankincense can increase your intuition and spiritual connection.

2. Natural Household Cleaner

Frankincense oil is an antiseptic, meaning it helps eliminate bacteria and viruses from your home and clean indoor spaces. The plant has been commonly burned to help disinfect an area and is used as a natural deodorizer. Use it in an essential oil diffuser to help reduce indoor pollution and deodorize and disinfect any room or surface in your home.

3. Natural Hygiene Product

Due to its antiseptic properties, frankincense oil is a great addition to any oral hygiene regimen. Look for natural oral care products that contain frankincense oil, especially if you enjoy the aroma. It can help prevent dental health issues like tooth decay, bad breath, cavities or oral infections. You can also consider making your own toothpaste by mixing frankincense oil with baking soda.

4. Anti-Aging and Wrinkle Fighter

Frankincense essential oil is a powerful astringent, meaning it helps protect skin cells. It can be used to help reduce acne blemishes, the appearance of large pores, prevent wrinkles, and it even helps lift and tighten skin to naturally slow signs of aging. The oil can be used anywhere where the skin becomes saggy, such as the abdomen, jowls or under the eyes. Mix six drops of oil to one ounce of unscented oil and apply it directly to the skin. Be sure to always do a small patch area test first to test for possible allergic reactions.

5. Relieves Symptoms of Indigestion
If you have any digestive distress, such as gas, constipation, stomach aches, irritable bowel syndrome, PMS or cramps, frankincense oil can help relieve gastrointestinal discomfort. It helps speed up the digestion of food, similar to digestive enzymes. Add one to two drops of oil to eight ounces of water or to a tablespoon of honey for GI relief. If you’re going to ingest it orally, make sure it’s 100 percent pure oil; do not ingest fragrance or perfume oils.

6. Scar, Wound, Stretch Mark or Acne Remedy

Frankincense oil can help with wound healing and may decrease the appearance of scars. It may also help reduce the appearance of dark spots caused from acne blemishes, stretch marks, eczema and help with healing of surgical wounds. Mix two to three drops of oil with an unscented base oil or lotion and apply directly to skin. Be careful not to apply it to broken skin, but it’s fine for skin that’s in the process of healing.

7. Natural Cold or Flu Medicine

Next time you have a respiratory infection from a cold or flu, use frankincense essential oil to help provide relief from coughing. It can help eliminate phlegm in the lungs. It also acts as an anti-inflammatory in the nasal passages, making breathing easier, even for those with allergies or asthma. Add a few drops to a cloth and inhale for the respiratory benefits or use an oil diffuser.
